Giorgi - Plumed Hat" Dollar ND (1914) MS63 NGC, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn28, L&M-859, Kann-642a, Chang-CH213 (Rare), WS-0095, Wenchao-856 (rarity 3 stars), Shi Jiagan Collection-579. Pattern for the Founding of the Republic commemorative. By Luigi Giorgi, with artist's signature above right shoulder. A Proof or Specimen by all measures, and a veritably trademark rarity. Renowned for his role in creating some of the greatest designs of the late Qing and early Republican period, the Dollars and Patterns created by Tientsin mint Chief Engraver Luigi Giorgi are heralds of machine-made Chinese coinage, at a point where the issues of the nation reached their zenith. By far the most covetable of these issues are those bearing the artist's signature. Showing an even, tone-free, and nearly white-metal-like hue created by a contrast of dark and light, particularly to the reverse, the piece at hand can only be regarded as pristine. Hardly a stray mark intrudes upon the viewer's gaze, though the reverse shows a number of tiny strike throughs--likely from small threads on the die. One of the nicer specimens we have offered, deserving of special bidder attention.
